Sustainable supply chain for meat improves living conditions for farmers in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is a developing country with a high unemployment. The very young population is growing very fast. Young people try to find a better future sometimes outside Ethiopia, for example in Europe. The livestock of cattle, goat, sheep and camel is very big and the most important source of income. Export of livestock and slaughtered animals takes place to many countries, but predominantly to Arabic countries. The domestic market is relatively small; meat is expensive for many Ethiopian people. Elder people like to eat raw beef. For chicken meat there is a growing market.
A systemic approach of quality care is less developed in the supply chains for meat. Good hygienic conditions are a big problem, good expertise and facilities are rare.
The foundation SME strives to cooperate with smallholder farmers and slaughterhouses to improve the quality of meat production.

Sustainable Meat Ethiopia
Ethiopië is een ontwikkelingsland met een grote werkeloosheid. De zeer jonge
bevolking groeit razend snel. Jongeren zoeken hun toekomst soms buiten
Ethiopië. De veestapel van runderen, geiten, schapen en kamelen is groot en
de belangrijkste bron van inkomen. Export van levende have en geslacht vee
vindt op grote schaal plaats. De binnenlandse markt is relatief klein, vlees is
een duur product. Oudere Ethiopiërs eten graag rauw rundvlees. Kippenvlees
is een groeimarkt.
Een systematische aanpak van kwaliteitsbeheer ontbreekt in een vleeslijn van
veevoer naar de consument. Hygiëne is een groot probleem en deskundigheid
is vaak ver te zoeken.
De stichting SME spant zich in om samen met Ethiopische (kleine) boeren en
slachterijen de kwaliteit van de vleesproductie te verbeteren.
